JOY Club
Just Older Youth
JOY Club is one avenue of ministry to the seniors in our church and was
organized in the summer of 2003. JOY is an acronym for
Just Older Youth.
The purpose of our club is two fold. First is our emphasis on missions,
learning about different mission projects and supporting mission needs and
activities. Promoting and encouraging fellowship among our members is our
second purpose.

The second Tuesday of the month is our regularly scheduled meeting time.
We have a potluck luncheon at 11:15 AM, celebrating birthdays and
anniversaries, and discuss and select activities to support. The potluck
dishes are always varied and delicious, the programs are great and we
welcome all seniors and visitors.

The programs that follow lunch may be guest speaker or an activity, and
occasionally we have a game day or a DID film. We have had a dessert
afternoon potluck, also. Some of our guest speakers have been; missionaries
(active and retired), church members (talking about their professions), new
church members (just getting to know them, their work, hobbies, etc.), a
retired Army Chaplain-Bible Scholar, a history of Catalina, and learning about
ministries of our staff.

Some of our mission projects have been; helping to fill a container with items
and supplies needed for a new mission school in Zambia, Africa, supporting a
child in an orphanage in Naco, Mexico and visiting that orphanage, touring
the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Catlaina (a Wycliffe program), collecting
clothing and household items going to Mexico for two organizations, collecting
toys for Andrea's Closet a UMC, collecting clothing and household items for
Bethany House/Gospel Rescue Mission.

We have taken many side trips to functions and local attractions outside the
church - such as; the International Wildlife Museum, an inside tour behind the
cages at Reid Park Zoo, touring the Duval Mine, touring the 3 facilities of the
Gospel Rescue Mission, a guided tour of the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun,
picnics on Mt. Lemmon, the Tucson Rodeo, dinner theaters, a trip to
Katchner Cavern, an overnight trip to the Grand Canyon via the Grand
Canyon train out of Williams and another overnight trip to Jerome, Arizona
and the Verde Valley Rail Train.

Some of our members attend the 2 annual activities of Baptist Senior Life
Ministries of Arizona. In March is the "Spring Spectacular" luncheon for
Tucson and Southern Arizona Baptist Churches. In August is the "Flagstaff
Summit" for all churches in Arizona.

We support, contribute to, and attend the Women's Ministry activities at out
church - collecting diapers for the Tucson Pregnancy Crises Center,
collecting Bibles for Gospel Rescue Mission, making throws (small blankets)
for the Catlaina Sheriff's program for displaced children, attending the
"Ladies Night Out" program, and making Easter Baskets.

Our next project is to renovate a room at Bethany House - The Center for
Women and Children - a facility at Gospel Rescue Mission. We will paint, add
new furnishings, bedding, towels, kitchen items, curtains, and some
decorative pieces.
